Yes, we live in the age of streaming services, and a few years ago, even before it all started, I had already begun not only watching films and series digitally but also buying them. Initially with Apple, which turned out to be a mistake due to Apple’s policies, and then with Amazon Prime.

Calling it a mistake in general would be wrong, but I wasn’t and still am not 100% happy with it; I missed the physical medium itself, the tactile experience of inserting a DVD or even a VHS tape. By the time I realized this, I had already halved my DVD collection.

For this reason, I started buying media again, mainly DVDs but also the occasional VHS tape, simply out of nostalgia. Plus, I have a recorder, so I can still watch them. That’s why I thought it might be fitting to write a little about it here. Most of the things, or actually everything, I’ve bought over the last two years has been second-hand because buying them new is just too expensive for me. And since many people are decluttering, it’s worth it. However, I won’t mention prices; I’ll leave that to your research skills.

One more thing upfront: not everything I present here will end up on the blog at the same time. Those are two entirely different things!

Firefly

Firefly is one of those series I had to buy back because I already owned it but unfortunately sold it when I downsized part of my collection.

I still remember exactly how we watched the movie in the cinema back then and went straight to the nearby DVD shop to get the series because we were so fascinated. The crew, the setting, the whole world, it was simply unique. And that wasn’t just because of a still relatively fresh Nathan Fillion but also thanks to all the others. It’s also a nice contrast to the very sterile Star Trek and incorporates some cyberpunk elements as well.

Homeland

Homeland was one of the first series I watched on Prime back then, and I still remember dropping out after season four. It felt too much like repeating an already established concept rather than taking it and tweaking or reinterpreting it.

I really liked the first two seasons because I simply enjoy Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. Mandy Patinkin is also worth mentioning, I always enjoy seeing him. Unfortunately, my memory doesn’t extend much beyond that, but that’s okay because I’m looking forward to refreshing it and hope to stick with it longer this time. I just realized there are actually eight seasons, quite impressive!

iZombie

iZombie was a series I really enjoyed watching on Netflix back then, and I was shocked to realize that was already in 2015, ten years ago! What happens to time? I don’t remember how long I watched it, but I do recall Liv, played by Rose McIver, eating brains, or parts of them, and mixing them with other food. At some point, it just became gross because those chunks of brain started looking a bit too real. It made me feel uneasy while watching, and seeing the cover again immediately brought back those memories.

But that doesn’t matter because I still find the concept of the series fascinating and hope my stomach can handle it this time. For now, I’m optimistic and will just see how it goes.

This may be a wild mix, but nonetheless, I’m looking forward to each individual series. However, I’ve also noticed once again that I enjoy various genres, even though I thought I had a focus, mostly on sci-fi or crime.

I mainly noticed this because I often pushed aside several series from the same genre. But perhaps it’s simply because the series weren’t good, and it had nothing to do with the genre itself. This is definitely a thought I’ll pursue further. And again, several ideas are rushing through my head, but I should probably save them as drafts first and see if I can make something of them.
