If you want to know what I have to say about Ted Lasso (Apple TV, 2020) in general, you should check out this article. Starting today, August 5, 2026, this article will focus on the new season that no one would have thought possible, but which is now taking A.F.C. Richmond by storm, again.
I mean, we know that everyone gets back together, and that it happens in the U.S. because there was that promotional photo from the diner, and that’s almost exactly where the episode starts. I won’t spoil what happens before that here, but I’ll just say this: it feels completely surreal.
Unfortunately, there’s a slight letdown for German viewers, because Higgins has a different voice, and Rebecca’s boyfriend, who now has a name, also has a different voice. Regrettably, neither really fits, in Higgins’s case out of habit, and in the case of Matthijs, Rebecca’s boyfriend, because his other voice, Christopher Kussin’s, is simply a bit deeper and softer. That makes him come across differently right away; this new voice, Matthias Klie’s, is far too direct, transparent, and, as much as it pains me to say, boring.
What I absolutely love is all this absurdity. It all feels wrong because everyone is in the U.S. and is currently being Americanized, hopefully not for long. But it fits perfectly with the show’s overall charm, as does the fact that everyone has gotten a little older. Because at the same time, they’ve matured and have been through a lot, which we’ll hopefully learn more about, and it just suits them incredibly well.
This brings an incredibly pleasant, yet not out of place, sense of freshness to the first episode, because we have familiar characters in an unfamiliar setting. This certainly isn’t new, but it makes it interesting. Because once they’re back in Richmond, everything will feel new again, especially since everything there will be different from what we’re used to. Because let’s be honest, we know that Ted will be working as a coach again at A.F.C. Richmond, and this time he’ll be coaching, or maybe even just co-coaching the women’s team.
And let’s be honest, the emotional depth that I love so much about the first three seasons is back, too. Sometimes it’s in-your-face, sometimes subtle, but it’s there, and I just love it.
I wasn’t too worried, but I’ll admit, I was a little, though it was completely unfounded. And now, at the end, even a small wish I had during Henry’s football game, around the middle of the episode, is coming true (I’m just not sure if I should tell you about it!).
An absolutely fantastic start to the new season, and I’m looking forward to everything that’s yet to come. Lots of laughter, lots of tears, and certainly some conflicts too, I’m pretty sure of that.
And if I understood one comment correctly, it seems we’re also getting a female Roy Kent with the new coach.
But it was also an incredibly strong start because it didn’t pick up right where the trailer left off. First, we get settled in, feel at home again, even though “home” looks very different because of the setting, and get used to the characters.
I’m really curious to see who else we’ll run into from the first season. Coach Beard for sure, he was already in the trailer. I really hope that Nathan, the other players, and of course Trent Crimm, Mae, and the three super fans will all make an appearance. Because in this episode, you could already get a sense of the vibe this season might have, and it would be great if that vibe rubbed off on the three guys too!
Well, we’re also getting a little dose of nostalgia right now, because it looks like Apple TV is staying true to its formula and releasing one episode per week, just as was the case with Silo (AMC Studios, 2023) and Pluribus (High Bridge Productions, 2025). So we’ll have to wait a whole week for the next episode, and you know what? That’s not such a bad thing. Because with Ted Lasso, the anticipation is part of the fun!
I’m really looking forward to more, and I’m curious to see how much longer we’ll get to enjoy Ted Lasso! With a start like this, hopefully for quite a while yet!
